Google+ wants to destroy the Demonkid [UPDATED]
Back in 1999 i went online for the first time ever with my own new Orange iMac on a dial up modem. My collage friend at the time introduced me to an Instant messaging program called ICQ and it asked me for a username. The internet seemed such a vast open space of uncertainty, who was out there? what sort of people will i meet, what sort of people will find me? what the hell am i getting myself into?
So i chose not to use my real name, i used the name of a character in a comic book i was writing back then, 'EddySparks'. Eventually over time i was using the username for email, chatrooms, forum posts and early gaming avatars and the circle of friends i met online knew me as Eddy.
Couple years later i start up my own Website based around a self branding called 'Demonkid' and it becomes a place that People who new me real world and those online could both go and check out what im up to.
So a few years later again and im discovering Second Life, a virtual world with its own Community and connections. I chose 'Loki Eliot' because i had to choose a surname from a list of names provided. Since i could not have Eddy Sparks, i decided to choose a totally new name, and now i think more people know me for the Name Loki than either of my other names.
Now i have circles of friends who know me by Names specific to certain communities and activities and encompassing then all is the Demonkid Self Brand that they all know me for. This is how my identity has evolved in the digital networked age and it works well on my blog and twitter.
When it comes to Facebook and Google+ my multilayered identity starts getting picked at. I only have one Facebook page and its devoted to my real world friends. I don't mind this much as its linked to my Demonkid twitter account and gets updated when i tweet.
Google+ in my 'circle' of friends seems to be kicking up a storm when it comes to chosen identities. The way Google+ apparently works is that you can have a different circles of friends devoted to the different communities you are part of. Sounds familiar to how i have things set up with my own communities, so should be real helpful. Except no, because Google have suggested that using the self brand 'Demonkid' could get me suspended.
How i would like to use Google+ is to have a 'Demonkid' account and create circles of friends based on my extra identities. I could bring a wealth of contacts and activity to my Google+ page, but im not going to bother if Google keep saying my profile and all the work gone into it might get deleted.
How will the Demonkid survive when these Social Services want to break it down into marketable chunks..... i'll have to wait and see.
UPDATE After my good friend who first got me onto ICQ read this blog post he simply stated "FUCK GOOGLE, MAKE A DEMONKID G+ ACCOUNT ANYWAY!"
